What counts as a twist depends on the expectations set by the story. And those are built on expectations based on other stories.

In some of the stories I've flicked through, sure. It's a popular angle. Lots of heroism going on in those, for some reason.

Why not? I mean, if it's not your thing then understandable. But anyone can try to be a knight, if they train enough. And have something they want to protect.

Aoi is designed for people to want to rescue her. Aoi couldn't take on that kind of protagonist's role.

That's a pretty defeatist way of looking at it. I'm not going to sing the praises of being a knight, but sitting back and doing nothing's not a great alternative either.

Aoi doesn't do nothing. Aoi does love interest and side character things.
